The "Energy Storage System (ESS)" is a device that stores generated electricity for use when needed. ESS plays a crucial role in providing a stable power supply and enhancing the efficiency of new renewable energy usage. LG Energy Solution recognized the importance of ESS early on and is producing ESS products based on competitive technology. Based on this effort, LG Energy Solution is making an effort to create the era of smart grids by expanding the distribution of new renewable energy.
LG Energy Solution''s Competitive Edge in Producing High-Capacity, Compact ESS Batteries
LG Energy Solution showcases various ESS products based on its expertise in developing and manufacturing high-performance, high-quality batteries. It produces ESS for different purposes, including power grid, commercial, residential use, and uninterruptible power supply systems (UPS). It is also focusing on eco-friendly management by recycling waste batteries for ESS.
LG Energy Solution''s ESS products have three leading competitive edges rst is the application of highly advanced technology in battery cells for ESS. LG Energy Solution manufactures battery cells using the "Lamination & Stacking" method. This technique efficiently utilizes the space inside the pouch cases, thereby enhancing the energy density and enabling the production of batteries that deliver consistent and uniform energy output. Such stable and high-performance battery cells form the foundation of its quality ESS batteries.
Second is the achievement of high-capacity yet compact-size ESS products for space efficiency. The employment of polymer battery cells has allowed the realization of this space efficiency. Using these cells, LG Energy Solution has created thinner and smaller sizes for both the power grid and residential ESS.
Last is that LG Energy Solution offers customized ESS batteries. It not only provides products in various battery forms like cells, packs, and racks, but also designs ESS products tailored to specific applications and purposes.
LG Energy Solution''s Home ESS Products "Prime+" and "enblock"
LG Energy Solution offers a wide range of ESS products. Among all, let''s explore the residential ESS products and technology targeting the North American and European markets.
LG Energy Solution launched Prime+, targeting the North American market. The product lines include Prime+ 10H and 16H. Prime+ 10H has a total capacity of 19.2 kWh, and Prime+ 16H boasts 32 kWh. Both products can use two modules in parallel.
Prime+ is gaining attention in the market thanks to its numerous advantages. Prime+ has an inverter that converts direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC) on-board, facilitating quick and simple installation. Moreover, it only takes 10 to 15 minutes to commission the inverter and ESS battery, which is a notably short time. Another significant advantage is that Prime+ is compatible with existing solar power systems.
To begin with, enblock E is the first from LG Energy Solution to apply the LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) pack. Thanks to LG Energy Solution''s advanced processing technology, the energy density of the LFP battery has been significantly improved, thereby enhancing the quality of enblock E. Another notable feature of enblock E is its expandability. By simply inserting ESS battery packs, it can be expanded to a maximum of 5 modules, reaching a total capacity of 15.5 kWh. This feature is expected to provide various solutions tailored to individual customer needs.
On the other hand, enblock S features NCM (Nickel, Cobalt, Manganese) batteries. This model boasts the advantage of being both wall-mountable and standalone, making it highly convenient for users. Like enblock E, enblock S offers the flexibility to expand capacity with multiple modules. It utilizes a stackable module structure, allowing for the configuration of up to 5 modules, collectively providing a total capacity of 17.1 kWh.
We have explored the ESS battery technology secured by LG Energy Solution and its lineup of residential ESS products. From Prime+, which is set to dominate the North American battery market, to enblock, which will soon be officially launched in the European market! LG Energy Solution is dedicated to shaping a society that coexists with eco-friendly energy by developing ESS battery technology.

Let’s learn about the unit of electricity and the battery capacity required for producing an electric vehicle.
The battery capacity needed for producing a high-performance BEV
A battery capacity of about 80 kWh is needed to produce a high-performing all-electric vehicle that can travel at least 500km on one charge.
(*A BEV produced by LG Energy Solution)
The kWh is the same unit we see when we check our electricity bill. First, W (watt) is the unit of power and the rate of work performed when a current of 1A (ampere) flows through a voltage of 1V (volt). Wh is a unit of energy equivalent to the power consumed for an hour and is calculated by multiplying watts times hours. And kWh is a unit for measuring a larger amount of electricity, with 1 kWh equaling 1,000 Wh. Considering that the average monthly power use of a family of four is 350 kWh, 80 kWh is approximately the amount one person uses for a month.
LG Energy Solution aims to improve its annual battery production capacity up to 540 GWh through its global strategies that include expanding production facilities. (*EV batteries, small batteries and ESS are included.) GWh is commonly used when measuring energy consumption of large power plant or a nation. 1 GWh is equivalent to 1,000,000 kWh. Since manufacturing a high-performance EV requires 80 kWh, 540 GWh is large enough to manufacture 6.75 million EVs.
LG Energy Solution announced mid-to long-term business strategies in its earnings presentation for the second quarter of 2022. For the North American market, it plans to expand joint ventures with finished car manufacturers and to supply more cylindrical batteries for its existing clients and EV startups. In Europe, it will increase supply by establishing a new production base for cylindrical batteries in addition to the Poland plant where pouch batteries are produced. In addition, for the Asian market, the battery maker will build a new production base beside China.
LG Energy Solution expects it can build a balanced production capacity across the globe with such strategies. You can look forward to watching it realize mid-to long-term goals and re-establish its status as the leader in the battery industry.
South Korean battery manufacturer LG Energy Solution presented its latest innovations at the Smarter E event in Munich last week. It also announced its transition from nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery chemistry to lithium iron phosphate (LFP) in its future products.
Flexibility is at the heart of the latest battery storage innovations coming from South Korean battery company LG Energy Solution. As seen at the Smarter E event in Munich last week, the business has gone one step further in modularizing its RESU Flex home battery system. It has also developed a new containerized, grid-scale energy storage solution that is delivered pre-assembled.
True to its name, the modular RESU Flex residential battery storage solution can be installed in various capacities, ranging from to 8.6 kWh to 17.2 kWh, with more than 30 different installation forms to maximize space efficiency. According to customer preferences, RESU Flex can be installed on any surface, indoor or outdoor, said the manufacturer.
Depending on the configuration, RESU Flex has a voltage range of 192 V to 531.2 V and can serve different energy usage patterns. The 8.6 kWh system, which features two battery modules and a battery protection unit, is primarily designed to support self-consumption, shaving peak hour loads and back-up critical loads in emergency. The three-battery module unit with 12.9 kWh capacity can cover energy-consuming devices, such as heat pumps and EVs, as well as provide back up to critical loads in emergency. The 17.2 kWh system is well-equipped for a wide range of applications from home to small C&I, as well as a whole home backup, depending on the functionality of the inverter.
The battery module measures 665.2 mm x 665.2 mm x 148.4 mmm and weighs in at 48.9 kg. All configurations come with a separate battery protection unit which weighs at 16.6 kg. The operating temperature range goes from -10 C to 50 C. The product also features an IP55 protection level.
