AES El Salvador has announced plans to invest more than $41 million in 2024 to enhance and expand its electrical distribution network. This ambitious initiative aims to modernize the country''s electrical infrastructure, improve service reliability, and accommodate growing demand.

Recently, the company invested over $1 million in an electrical grid interconnection project in San Salvador, which will benefit more than 7,000 customers in the densely populated Colonia Escalón area. This project aligns with AES´s commitment to adopting advanced technologies and innovative solutions to increase energy efficiency and reduce service interruptions.

Daniel Bernárdez, Vice President of Operations for AES El Salvador, emphasized the company''s dedication to continuous improvement: "We are constantly modernizing our electrical distribution networks to enhance the service we provide. This year, we project an investment of over $41 million to improve and expand our distribution network, along with an additional $17 million for digitalization, technology, and automation."

The recent interconnection project involved the installation and modification of more than 19 kilometers of distribution lines, 210 poles, and upgrades to three substations: «El Volcán,» «San Antonio Abad,» and «Nuevo Cuscatlán.» These enhancements are designed to ensure a more secure and continuous energy supply for the region.

Bernárdez noted the importance of such interconnections in integrating the national electrical system and fostering economic and social development. "AES collaborates closely with other institutions in the electrical sector to strengthen the Salvadoran electrical system and accelerate the future of energy," he stated.

As AES El Salvador continues to invest in its infrastructure, the company aims to create a more reliable energy landscape that supports the nation''s growth and development.

Through its distribution companies AES EEO and AES DEUSEM, AES El Salvador has invested $332,000 in two circuit repowering projects in the department of Usulután. These projects seek to guarantee the continuity of electricity supply for more than 30,000 customers in the districts of Santiago de María, El Triunfo, Jiquilisco, Puerto El Triunfo and Usulután.

AES highlighted that the modernization of power lines drives the economic and social development of the benefited communities, in addition to minimizing interruptions in service caused by weather conditions or traffic accidents.

"This is a quality service project that consists of replacing old wiring with more robust and resistant wiring, which will allow us to improve the response speed to contingencies thanks to a more efficient connection scheme between distribution substations," said Abel Villalta, Construction Supervisor of AES EEO.

In addition, with an investment of $246,000, AES installed new electrical equipment at the El Tránsito substation, in the department of San Miguel. This improvement will benefit customers in the communities located in the aforementioned district and in rural areas of the Jucuarán district, Usulután.

In this way, AES El Salvador continues to execute its 2024 investment plans in the eastern part of the country, implementing new technologies in the electricity distribution sector in the rural communities of Usulután to accelerate the future of energy.

El Salvador has achieved an electrification rate of 98%, positioning itself as a leader in the Central American region. This milestone, attained through a series of investments and modernization of the electrical grid, marks a significant advancement for the country, according to Abraham Bichara, the CEO of AES El Salvador.

Speaking to a local media outlet, Bichara highlighted the progress made since the privatization of the country’s electrical distribution in the 1990s, when electrification levels were between 68% and 70%. He emphasized that El Salvador’s electrification rate serves as an example for Central America, placing it on par with Costa Rica, which boasts a 99% electrification rate.

Bichara also discussed the transformation of El Salvador’s energy matrix, with the integration of renewable technologies such as wind and solar power. Notably, AES has connected 600 megawatts from 60 solar plants to the distribution and transmission grids, constituting approximately 10% to 12% of the total energy matrix. Of this, AES contributes an estimated 2.5%.

The CEO highlighted the strategic placement of 15 solar plants directly connected to distribution networks, reducing energy losses during transportation and bringing energy closer to consumption centers. Among these plants, the recently inaugurated project in Meanguera del Golfo stands out as the most innovative in Central America and Latin America. This project utilizes excess energy storage to supply power to the islands of Meanguera, Zacatillo, and Meanguerita, ensuring continuity of service.

Bichara emphasized that such solutions not only ensure energy security but also position El Salvador with surplus capacity, potentially enabling energy exports. AES El Salvador continues its commitment to investment, allocating $58 million for the second consecutive year to enhance distribution, supervision, and control of renewable energy plants integrated into the grid.

With these advancements, El Salvador solidifies its position as a regional leader in electrification and renewable energy adoption, driving sustainable development and economic growth.

The energy distributors AES CAESS, AES CLESA, AES EEO, and AES DEUSEM announced their projection of investments in El Salvador of $217 million for the next five years. This includes an influx of 52 million dollars by 2023. The energy company will develop strategic projects for the modernization and expansion of the electrical network. In addition, it will allocate funds to implement state-of-the-art technologies to guarantee a world-class service to its industrial and residential customers.

AES El Salvador explained that, of the total investment amount, US$ 37 million will be allocated to the improvement and expansion of the electrical distribution system. This is in addition to developing conversion projects from aerial to underground networks. In addition, $15 million will be used to modernize and further integrate digitization, technology, and automation into its technical operations and business management. AES El Salvador explained that its 2023 strategic investment plan aims to guarantee a reliable, continuous, and secure service to its clients, including:

This year, AES El Salvador will also focus its investment on developing innovative projects to integrate more technology, digitization, and automation into its technical operations and business management. Investments in technological innovation include the following:

AES explained that, through its energy distribution companies, in the last seven years (2016-2022), it invested 284.2 million dollars. In addition, in line with its commitment to positively impact the country, it announced that for the next five years (2023-2027), it plans to invest 217 million dollars in improving and expanding its distribution network as digitization projects, technology and automation.

With these investments, AES El Salvador reinforces its commitment to transforming the electrical network, thus promoting the economic and social development of the country to accelerate the future of energy together with its residential, commercial, and industrial clients.

AES El Salvador is part of the global AES Group and is the leading electricity distribution company in El Salvador. AES El Salvador’s four distribution companies (AESS, CLESA, EEO, and DEUSEM) together serve more than 80% of the country’s electric power market.

Energy investment in El Salvador has been significant during the last decade. The Central American nation seeks to modernize its energy matrix and increase the production of green energy to meet future needs.

El Salvador’s energy matrix has not only grown, but it has also changed. Investments in the country''s power grid during the last decade have exceeded US $2.5 billion. This has enabled significant energy generation growth, especially in terms of renewables.

Some of the investment in El Salvador has been made by: Pacific Energy (Energía del Pacífico), with US $1.15 billion; AES, with almost US $680 million; NEOEN, with another US $300 million; MERELEC Group, US $97.5 million; and DELSUR another US $50 million, among others.

In constructing all the necessary infrastructure for its power generation plant, its floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU), and all the transmission infrastructure associated with its project, Energía del Pacífico invested US $1.15 billion. This enabled the company to initiate operations last May.
