Nio has demonstrated the real-life range of its new 150-kilowatt-hour Ultra Long

Chinese startup Nio rolled out the first mass-produced semi-solid battery pack, which will be available as a part of the battery swap service in a few months. This battery offers an energy density of 260 Wh/kg and provides a range of up to 1,055 km.

Nio is a high-end electric car brand founded in 2014. Currently, its cars are mostly offered with two battery options: 75 kWh and 100 kWh. Customers can also buy a car without a battery by picking a battery as a service subscription with a monthly payment. Soon, Nio-branded vehicles will also get one more battery option for long trips, which offers a capacity of 150 kWh. It will be available only via subscription. The mass production of this battery pack has started in China.

After the first announcement in 2021, Nio has finally started mass production of the 150-kWh semi-solid battery (SSB). It was designed by WeLion New Energy Technology, a Beijing-based battery maker that also acts as Nio’s battery cell supplier.

According to Nio, the 150 kWh SSB cells have an energy density of 360 Wh/kg. And the whole pack has a 260 Wh/kg density. Another feature of this pack is a cooling system that is six times stronger compared to ordinary batteries. The weight of the 150 kWh SSB is just 676 kg, which is just 20 kg more than the Nio’s 100 kWh battery pack. For comparison, the 135.5 kWh LFP battery from BYD weighs 903 kg. So, WeLion and Nio did a great job reducing the weight of their SSB.

Nio didn’t disclose when exactly the 150 kWh SSB will go live. However, Nio said on social media that the official launch is scheduled for the second quarter of this year. The mass production start hints the 150 kWh SSB will become available at Nio’s Power Swap Stations (PPS) in a few months. The best time for the launch is summer when many tourists visit Xinjiang, a western Chinese province.

Previously, Nio co-founder and CEO William Li tested the Nio ET7 sedan with the 150-kWh semi-solid battery on board. He drove 1,044 km on a single charge with 3% battery capacity remaining. During the test event, William Li shared that this battery was previously tested on a route from Kunming to Beihai, traveling 1,145 km on a charge. It is the world record for a mass-produced electric vehicle.

This is the largest-capacity battery pack mass-produced in the Chinese passenger car market, and Nio models equipped with the pack have a range of up to 1,055 km, Nio said.

Nio''s (NYSE: NIO) 150-kWh semi-solid-state battery pack is finally going to start entering service in a few months, after several delays.

The 150-kWh ultra-long-range battery pack will go live in the second quarter, the electric vehicle (EV) maker said today in its fourth-quarter 2023 earnings highlights posted to its social media accounts in China.

This is the largest-capacity battery pack mass-produced in the domestic passenger vehicle segment, and Nio models equipped with the pack have a range of up to 1,055 kilometers, it said.

Nio unveiled the 150-kWh semi-solid-state battery when it released the ET7 sedan on January 9, 2021 at the Nio Day 2020 event.

The semi-solid battery''s cells come from local startup Beijing WeLion New Energy Technology, which began delivering 360 Wh/kg lithium battery cells to Nio on June 30, 2023

The batteries currently circulating in Nio''s battery swap network include 70/75-kWh standard range packs and 100-kWh long range packs.

The new 150-kWh pack weighs 575 kg, which is 20 kg, or 3.6 percent, higher than the 555 kg of Nio''s 100-kWh pack, according to Nio''s July 2023 update to its user manual.

After 1,044 kilometers of driving, that ET7 had a remaining charge of 3 percent and a remaining CLTC range of 36 kilometers, according to Nio''s announcement at the time.

Also on December 17, local media outlet Jiemian cited WeLion as saying it expected to start supplying semi-solid-state batteries to Nio in April 2024 in bulk.

Because it''s a new technology, the 150-kWh battery pack is currently costly, and Nio co-founder and president Li-Hung Chin mentioned in February 2023 that the pack would cost about the same as an ET5.

The ET5 is Nio''s least expensive model at the moment, with a starting price of RMB 298,000 ($41,400).

The battery cells were developed by WeLion, with Nio providing some technical and financial support, another local media outlet, LatePost, said in a December 17 report.

Nio originally planned to co-develop a high energy density semi-solid-state batteries with Chinese power battery giant CATL, but was rejected because of the high cost, according to LatePost.

Nio only then chose WeLion, which has accumulated technology but has never mass-produced automotive batteries, according to the report.

Starting June 1 at 10 am Beijing Time, Nio owners will have the option to rent the 150-kWh battery pack on a daily basis, giving their vehicles up to 1,000 km of range.

Nio (NYSE: NIO) will begin official operations of the 150-kWh ultra-long-range battery pack tomorrow as planned, following a trial run this month.

Starting at 10 am Beijing Time on June 1, Nio owners will have the option to rent the 150-kWh battery pack on a daily basis, giving their vehicles up to 1,000 kilometers of range, the company announced today on its mobile app.
