ERIE COUNTY, NY – June 6, 2023 – Key Capture Energy, LLC (KCE), a leading U.S. energy storage independent power producer headquartered in Albany NY, announces the launch of its 20 MW / 45.6 MWh battery energy storage system, KCE NY 6 just miles south of downtown Buffalo. This project is interconnected with National Grid and KCE utilized Sungrow''s battery energy storage system equipment.
Key Capture Energy partnered with Black and McDonald on construction and engineering services, including partnerships with unionized labor International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW Locals 41, 43 and 1249); United Steel Workers (USW 135) and Civil Service Employees Association (CSEA) — meeting KCE''s focus on hiring locally and supporting the community.
"We are excited to share that KCE NY 6 is officially coming online, which is a major step towards New York''s ambitious goal of achieving 70% renewable energy by 2030," said Taylor Quarles, Vice President, Development for KCE. "This project represents our continued commitment to developing innovative and sustainable solutions to meet the growing demand for clean energy in New York and across the country. The NY 6 project will help to create a more resilient and reliable grid while reducing emissions and improving air quality for communities across the state."
Key Capture has entered into long-term agreements providing for consistent revenue contributions to the communities in which NY 6 is located. The Host Community Agreement supports the Village of Blasdell, and the Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILOT) agreement supports the town of Hamburg via the Hamburg Industrial Development Agency.
The project received $5.0 million in support from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) through its Bulk Market Acceleration Bridge Incentive Program, which previously provided financial support for new energy storage systems over 5 megawatts before closing in February 2021. KCE NY 6 marks KCE''s third utility-scale battery project to enter into operations in New York, joining the 20 MW KCE NY 1 and the 3 MW KCE NY 3 projects.
"As New York continues to invest in and build its cleaner and more resilient grid, public-private partnerships with companies like Key Capture Energy are critical to accelerating deployment of transformational energy storage resources,"said NYSERDA President and CEO Doreen M. Harris."KCE NY 6 is part of a growing portfolio of bulk energy storage projects that will help make renewables like wind and solar available when and where they are needed most, reduce the use of obsolete peaker plants, and ultimately lower statewide electric system costs."
“We are pleased to support Key Capture Energy’s KCE NY 6 project by providing our battery energy storage system equipment, which has been proven to be reliable and efficient. This project is another great example of Sungrow’s commitment to providing innovative and sustainable energy solutions to help meet the growing demand for clean energy in the US and around the world,” said Hank Wang, President of Sungrow Americas.
"We are thrilled about the successful completion of KCE''s NY6 project in New York. KCE''s relentless expansion is a testament to Passkey''s commitment towards clean energy and sustainable future," said Seungyong Oh, Head of Power Solution Unit, Passkey.

Key Capture Energy (KCE) builds large-scale battery energy storage systems today that will transition us to the grid of tomorrow. As the US electric grid is increasingly reliant on intermittent wind and solar power, battery storage provides the capacity to keep the lights on when the sun isn''t shining and the wind isn''t blowing.
Since 2016, Key Capture Energy has developed, constructed, and now owns and operates a geographically diverse portfolio of large-scale battery storage projects that integrate renewable energy onto the grid and that deliver:
With over 600 MW of battery storage projects in operations and under construction and a development portfolio of over 9,000 MW, Key Capture Energy has taken the unique approach of starting with small projects, learning by doing, and then scaling to much larger projects.
With increasingly volatile wholesale energy markets, Key Capture Energy has built an autonomous energy trading platform, MarketCapture® to maximize revenue through our optimization engine, WattBot®.
Growing from two to nearly 100 employees since our 2016 start, KCE operates projects in two states and has a development portfolio of projects across 18 states.

Key Capture Energy, LLC(Key Capture Energy), a leading U.S. energy storage independent power producer, has started construction of KCE NY 6, a 20 megawatt (MW) energy storage project located outside of Buffalo. This project was enabled by New York State Energy Research and Development Authority''s (NYSERDA) Bulk Energy Storage Market Bridge Incentive (MBI) program, supporting New York''s Climate Leadership and Protection Act mandate of 1,500 MW of storage by 2023 and 3,000 MW by 2025.
KCE NY 6 will create local economic stimulus, new jobs, and ongoing payments to the Hamburg community, including new emergency vehicles. KCE NY 6 is expected to pause construction during the Buffalo winter and be online in summer 2022.
Jeff Bishop, Co-founder and CEO of Key Capture Energy, said, "New York''s goal of 100% zero-emission electricity provides a clear roadmap for companies like ours to invest in communities across the state and to provide the capacity necessary for New York''s resilient, efficient, sustainable, and affordable electric grid. As an Albany-based company we are proud to break ground on our third energy storage project in New York in support of the state''s energy capacity needs and public policy goals. We thank NYSERDA for their essential efforts to accelerate the deployment of energy storage projects."
Black & McDonald, with offices in East Syracuse, NY, was selected as the balance of plant (BOP) contractor and is providing turnkey engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) services. KCE NY 6 is the second energy storage project that Black & McDonald has served as an EPC partner on behalf of Key Capture Energy.
