General Motors is the second manufacturer to reach that level, with subsidies ending April 2020 while all other manufacturers are still far behind and thus still enjoying their tax credits. The Tesla brand was envisioned by Elon Musk as an independent automaker which will focus on developing and producing electric vehicles at affordable prices. The brand’s first car was the Tesla Roadster and was based on the same platform as Lotus Elise.
The United States accounts for the majority of Tesla sales globally. Sales in the US were up by 280% from 48,000 in 2017 to 197,517 in 2018, while its global sales were up by 138% from 2017 to 2018.
