The Swiss battery maker Leclanché will build a 35.6 MW / 44.2 MWh solar-plus-storage power plant, which will provide with clean power state-owned St.Kitts electric utility Skelec over a 20-year period. The new facility will be able to cover around a fourth of the archipelago’s total electricity demand.
The government of the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis has awarded Swiss battery manufacturer Leclanché with a 20-year PPA for a large-scale solar-plus-storage plant.
The company said the 35.6 MW solar array will be paired with 44.2 MWh of storage capacity, and that it will be located near Basseterre, on the island of St.Kitts. It will be built close to a power station owned by local state-run utility Skelec, to which the facility will sell electricity. "The system will provide between 25-30% of the nation''s current power generation needs, while displacing the same amount of diesel-generated capacity," Leclanché stated.
The company will provide the storage technology and act as EPC contractor for the deployment of both the solar plant and the storage facility. "This project marks the first time a megawatt-scale solar energy system, stabilized by a state-of-the art lithium battery energy storage system, can be utilized to provide true ‘base load'' power for a utility on a Caribbean island," said Anil Srivastava, Leclanché''s CEO.
The project will be developed by a special purpose vehicle, which will be owned by the company and its local partner Solrid. Construction of the plant is set to begin in mid-October, with completion scheduled for September 2020. The company did not disclose any other technical or financial details.
Leclanché is also developing a large-scale storage project linked to renewables in Germany.

YVERDON-LES-BAINS, Switzerland; AMSTERDAM/OSLO, Norway – 14th December 2021 – MPC Energy Solutions (MPCES) has partnered with Leclanché, one of the world''s leading energy storage companies, publicly listed in Switzerland (SIX: LECN), to build the previously announced 35.7 MWp solar photovoltaic (PV) and 18.2 MW battery energy storage system (BESS) project designed with Leclanché Energy Management Software (L-EMS) in St. Kitts'' Basseterre Valley, next to the capital city of Basseterre.
The project requires about US$ 74 million of investment and MPCES has acquired 40% ownership in the project''s holding company, in which Leclanché owns 60%. MPCES will invest up to US$ 17million.
"At COP26 in Glasgow, St. Kitts and Nevis presented a remarkable plan to reduce CO2 emissions by 61 percent by switching to 100 percent renewable energy. Leclanché has a long and successful track record of concepting and building innovative utility-scale installations including several projects with S4 Energy in The Netherlands; the Cremzow, Germany system in collaboration with Enel Green Power Germany and ENERTRAG; SWB, Germany; Marengo, Chicago, United States and several Canadian projects.
The St. Kitts project, which is being built under an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract by Leclanché, has a 20-year USD-denominated Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the St. Kitts Electric Company (SKELEC), the only energy utility company on the island. The government of St. Kitts and Nevis leased the land in the Basseterre Valley to Leclanché under a 20-year agreement with the option of a five-year renewal. Groundbreaking of the project took place in December 2020.

The St. Kitts project has been communicated as part of MPCES''s advanced project backlog.
