Solar Solutions has a head office in Port Moresby and a branch in Lae province. Port Moresby is home to the largest airport in the country and Lae has the largest seaport. Having operations in these 2 large cities enables us to serve customers around the country and gives us access to major commercial clients, national government members, retail distributors, international donor organizations, and local NGOs & CBOs. Further branches are planned based on operation and upcoming project requirements.

The market of current and potential customers for Solar Solutions can be divided into 5 categories:

Our Showroom Customers and those we access via our social media platforms and direct inquiries. These customers are important as they pay our basic costs and allow us to maintain a retail presence.

This is the cornerstone of our business and presents the greatest economic and social impact opportunity, through the provision of sustainable technologies to the many in PNG who currently lack access to electricity. Our commitment to this sector is demonstrated in having a Sustainable Development Team that maintains new and ongoing collaborations with national and international partnerships.

As a Port Moresby-based business, our distributor partners have been a key part of our ability to service customers in other parts of the country. In May 2019 we opened a Distribution Center in Lae, then in August of 2020, we opened an official Lae Branch Showroom, enabling us to grow our distributor base significantly.

These customers are the main focus of our sales team. Our commercial customers are a vital part of our business and present the vast majority of our street light sales. Customers such as PNG Ports, Puma Energy, and BSP have been vital to the success of the business, especially in challenging economic times.

There are potentially significant opportunities to work with any government partner that fully understands our need to operate ethically and profitably

We are driven by a vision of PNG where everyone has access to technologies that enable them to live productive, dignified and healthy lives.

Puma Energy Papua New Guinea has officially commissioned a solar project at its Napa Napa Refinery, marking a milestone for the company''s solarisation journey, not only in PNG but also globally.

The project, which took four months to build, saw the installation of 684 solar panels at the Napa Napa Refinery, outside Port Moresby. This new setup can deliver 300KW of solar power, producing 485.5 MWh of energy per year, which will help modernise and reduce the facility''s CO2 emissions.

The development is a key part of Puma Energy''s sustainability strategy to reduce its operational GHG emissions. The company has set a sustainability target to reduce its global operational (Scope 1 and 2) emissions by 15 per cent by the end of 2025 and by 35 per cent by the end of 2032.

The solar project at Napa Napa refinery complements Puma Energy''s global program to connect its Puma branded retail stations and other sites to solar energy. The company has already connected over 250 Puma branded retail stations to solar energy, and is planning to connect 300 hundred by the end of 2023. In total, the company has now installed 8,875 MW of solar energy generation capacity across its operations.

Alongside the solar capacity Puma Energy has already installed across its network, this project will allow Puma to apply the expertise gained through this installation to offer similar renewable solutions to our commercial customers in Papua New Guinea. This will mean they can benefit from reduced energy costs, lower greenhouse gas emissions and a reliable supply of energy.

Papua New Guinea Company Chairman and Managing Director, Hulala Tokome said: "We are proud that Puma Energy PNG has launched the company''s biggest solar project in the region. It highlights our firm long-term commitment to operating sustainably and responsibly in the country.

Papua New Guinea''s enhanced Nationally Determined Contribution sets out ambitious plans to reduce its carbon emissions by half by 2030 and be entirely carbon neutral by 2050. This project fully supports these goals and, by helping our customers to install similar renewable energy solutions, Puma Energy can play a major role in helping the country meet these environmental commitments and promote energy security.

"Our ambition is to fulfil our purpose of energising communities while supporting the energy transition and reducing our environmental impact."

Welcome to PNG’s top-ranked business media.

Christian Lohberger (CL):  For the small-scale lanterns and Solar Home Systems being used in rural areas, demand has dropped. Many of these are often distributed with the support of corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs, and budgets for them have been cut, as has household income. At the same time, there is an uptick of support from international NGOs, the PNG government and multilateral programs, such as the PNG Electrification Partnership (PEP), which is leaning on solar as a major contributor for its off-grid goals.

For the Commercial and Industrial market there has probably been a slight increase in interest. The COVID-19 recession means CFOs are looking to cut overheads, and installing solar can reduce energy costs considerably. Electricity in PNG is still very expensive and the cost of solar power continues to fall each year. Now we''re seeing similar price drops for batteries, and I think that will be the next stage for solar projects, as many of them will begin to include energy storage.

‘If we get to 2030 and we''re not almost completely solar and hydro, I would be surprised.’

At the utility scale, PNG has a few solar farms under development, with largely unchanged progress as most of the obstacles here are regulatory more than economic. PNG Power Ltd and the Department of Energy are supportive of these projects, but there are a lot of moving parts and all parties have worked hard to keep them on track.

The government has ambitious electrification goals through the PEP announced at APEC 2018. We had hoped the PEP would be further advanced, but the five partner countries [PNG, Japan, New Zealand, Australia and the US] haven''t developed yet a unified program to push it forward, which isn''t a showstopper, but means that we''re seeing progress in some areas faster than others.
