The distribution system is one of the fundamental parts of the power system. This system helps to deliver the desired power supply from substations to consumers.

An electrical power distribution system is a network that distributes electricity from the sources of electric power generation like power plants to consumers i.e. residential, commercial, and industrial areas, or the delivery of power from the transmission end to the consumer end is known as the distribution system. The primary function of the electrical power distribution system is to supply power with the required voltage, currents, and frequency to fulfill user demand in an efficient, safe, and reliable manner at an affordable rate.

To ensure smooth power flow from generation to the end customer, the electrical distribution system components like transformers, switchgear, feeders, distribution lines, and panel boards among others are carefully designed and coordinated.

An electrical distribution system consists of components that deliver electricity from high-voltage transmission systems to consumers at utilization voltages. It bridges the gap between the power generation/transmission systems and the point of consumption. A distribution substation is an important component in the electrical power distribution system. It steps down high-voltage electricity from transmission lines to lower voltages suitable for distribution. This process involves transformers that reduce voltage levels, ensuring safety and compatibility with residential and commercial usage.

The key components of an electrical distribution system include:

A distribution substation is an important part of the electrical distribution system that receives power from the transmission system and lowers or steps down the voltage using transformers from transmission level voltages like 133kV to medium distribution voltages like 11kV, which is then used to supply various distribution feeders.

A typical distribution substation has switchgear, busbars, transformers, protection relays, and metering equipment and serves multiple feeders with distribution lines.

Feeders are the primary distribution lines that carry medium voltage power from the distribution substation and supply it directly or through distribution transformers to customers over large distances. They are also called distribution mains and supply multiple laterals that tap power directly to end consumers. Large industrial loads are also supplied via dedicated feeders.

Feeders are the main conductors that carry electricity from the substation to various parts of the distribution network. They are designed to handle large volumes of power and are critical in maintaining the voltage levels across the distribution area.

Distribution transformers are used to further lower the medium voltage from the distribution feeders to utilization voltages that are suitable for domestic, commercial, and small industrial users. A typical distribution transformer steps down voltages from 440 kV to 33 kV and then to 240/220V. They are installed on poles, pads, or underground vaults near the loads.

The distributor conductors carry the stepped-down low-voltage power from the distribution transformers to the consumer''s premises. They consist of either overhead lines or underground cables made of aluminum or copper. Distributor conductors have a tree wire configuration for single-phase lateral supplies.
