Plug-in electric vehicles are a cleaner alternative to traditional vehicles, and with generous purchasing subsidies and lower fuel and operating costs, they can also be a cheaper alternative, too. The federal government, for example, offers a tax credit of up to $7,500 for an electric vehicle purchase. Pepco offers EV charger rebates and other incentives. And, fuel costs for EVs are about half that of traditional fuels, according to the the Depart of Energy's eGallon tool. This page is designed to provide a list of these and other incentives, as well as general information on electric vehicles for District residents and businesses.
Transportation Electrification Roadmap
The Transportation Electrification Roadmap (TER) is the District’s encompassing plan regarding electrification of the transportation sector. The TER provides guidance to meeting the three overarching transportation goals of the Clean Energy DC Omnibus Act of 2018:
The TER calls upon the Mayor’s Transportation Electrification Working group to implement the roadmap, with the proposed policies and timelines.

Reduced Registration Fees for High Efficiency Vehicles
A new electric vehicle, other than a motorcycle and motorized bicycle, is eligible for a reduced vehicle registration fee of $36. This reduced rate applies to the first two years of registration after which the vehicle shall be treated as a Class I, Class II, or Class III, Class IV, whichever is applicable.

Award recipients are required to operate and maintain the EV charging stations, ensuring they are operational more than 97% of the time for five years from the date the chargers are open for public use. Award recipients will have one year from the date of the final grant agreement to build the new EV charging stations, with all four (4) conditionally awarded station locations anticipated to open by the end of 2025.
