St. Kitts and Nevis grapple with a relentless wave of power outages, and Mr. Clement Jomo Williams, the General Manager of The St. Kitts Electricity Company Limited (SKELEC), has stepped forward to shed light on the pressing issue. In an exclusive appearance on SKELEC''s Power Talk show, hosted by Corporate Communications Manager Ms. Patrice Harris on ZIZ Radio, Williams unveiled the multifaceted reasons behind the frequent disruptions.

“Reduced capacity has been a significant factor in the recent surge of outages. On a daily basis, SKELEC is just managing to meet the demand. Yesterday, two critical generator failures necessitated a marathon effort by our team, working tirelessly into the early hours to restore power. Adding to the strain, a vehicular accident this morning led to further load reduction after impacting a pole and transmission line,” Williams disclosed.

The Caribbean islands, including St. Kitts and Nevis, have been grappling with excessive heat advisories. Williams addressed the impact of scorching temperatures on the SKELEC generators, stating, “On extremely hot days, maintaining efficient generator operation becomes increasingly challenging. To prevent overheating and potential damage, we may need to curtail their capacity.”

In response to the crisis, SKELEC has implemented a strategic load-shedding schedule across various areas. Residents experiencing prolonged outages post-scheduled blackouts are urged to promptly report issues by dialing 465-2013 or using the mobile hotline at 600. The company is actively working to address the challenges posed by the surging demand and extreme weather conditions to ensure a reliable power supply for the community.

St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN): There have been several power outages in St. Kitts in recent weeks as the St. Kitts Electricity Company grapples with the effects of failed generators that have led to reduced generation capacity.

As recently as Tuesday, September 26, 2023 and Wednesday September 27, 2023 significant power interruptions were experienced through several areas of St. Kitts, leaving customers without power for hours in some areas.

As a result, SKELEC issued a notice stating, "Genset 1 and Genset 11 were taken offline to perform emergency repairs to a leaking line and turbocharger." In addition to these failures, there are also two other gensets which are offline for planned maintenance overhauls. As such, it has become necessary to conduct emergency load reduction outages due to reduced capacity at our Needs Must Power Plant."

Further compounding the problem, a traffic accident reduced the power generation capacity even more. SKELEC''s General Manager Clement Jomo Williams made the disclosure on Power Talk on Wednesday, September 27, 2023.

"As Murphy''s Law has it, "Whatever will go wrong, will go wrong; there was an accident this morning which further added to the reduction of load because the vehicle impacted a pole and affected the transmission lines. So, that, again, reduced capacity. Now, because the situation is so fluid, we put together internally a tentative measure of rotating load, which we expected would have only lasted yesterday, pending the repair of Generator 1, which is the largest set [of] five megawatts. Five megawatts is very significant as that represents at least 20 percent of the load for St. Kitts. Now, with that engine load, plus the other one, which is 3 megawatts and then the vehicle accident, about close to eight megawatts."

Mr Williams told the public that the team at SKELEC has worked into the wee hours of the mornings trying to repair faults and increase generation capacity.

Meanwhile, SKELECS''s General Manager said relief is around the corner once all repairs to assets are successfully completed.

"Sometime last year, we did a series of media tours in relation to two alternator failures that we had at the power station. Now, the good news is that one of one of the alternators is close to completion and should be returning to the Federation and put back in service shortly. Now, that would bring great relief to the residents of St. Kitts and Nevis. It is some time away. We anticipate another two months, but once we make repairs on Generator 1 and Generator 11, we should have enough capacity to meet the demand, and there would be no need for load management or any outage."

During a Power Talk Program earlier in September, Mr. Williams informed the public that the generation capacity mirrors the electricity demand at around 28.4 megawatts. He also mentioned that significant major investments would have to be made in the power generation system in the near future.

Basseterre, St. Kitts (28thJanuary 2022)—The St. Kitts Electricity Company Ltd. is advising the public of scheduled maintenance outages for the weekMonday 31stJanuary – Friday 4thFebruary.
