Toyota Motor Corporation (Toyota) announced today that the development and production plans for its next-generation batteries (performance version) and all-solid-state batteries were certified by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) as part of the Japanese government''s "Supply Assurance Plan for Batteries."

Certification was granted for (1) production of next-generation batteries (performance version) at Prime Planet Energy & Solutions, Inc. (PPES), (2) production of next-generation batteries (performance version) at Primearth EV Energy Co., Ltd.*1 (PEVE) and (3) R&D and production of all-solid-state batteries.

The "Initiatives to Ensure A Stable Supply of Batteries," a policy defined by METI, is based on the Economic Security Promotion Act. The policy aims to strengthen the production infrastructure of batteries, including battery cells, materials, and manufacturing equipment, which have been designated as critical materials. The battery industry is an equipment-intensive industry requiring large-scale investments in significant facilities. To maintain and enhance manufacturing capabilities and technologies within Japan''s battery industry, which includes equipment industries and material manufacturers, government support is provided.

By advancing battery development and production in Japan, Toyota aims to contribute to the further development of the industry and the strengthening of the production infrastructure of batteries. Additionally, by enhancing the competitiveness of batteries, Toyota seeks to improve the marketability of electrified vehicles and achieve carbon neutrality through a multi-pathway approach.

Honda Motor Co., Ltd. today unveiled the demonstration production line for all-solid-state batteries, which is being developed independently by Honda toward mass production. The line was constructed on the property of Honda R&D Co., Ltd. (Sakura), located in Sakura City, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. While conducting technical verification to establish a mass production process on this demonstration line, Honda will determine the basic specifications of the battery cells, with an aim to begin applying its all-solid-state batteries to electrified models that will be introduced to market in the second half of the 2020s.

By increasing cost competitiveness of its all-solid-state batteries through the adoption of a highly efficient production process and by expanding application of the batteries to a wide range of Honda mobility products, not only automobiles but motorcycles and aircraft, Honda aims to further reduce battery costs by taking advantage of economies of scale. Through these initiatives, Honda will offer new value made possible by its innovative all-solid-state battery technologies to an even greater number of customers and expand the joy of mobility.

TOKYO—Toshiba Corporation has developed a new lithium-ion battery using a cobalt-free 5V-class high-potential cathode material that significantly suppresses performance-degrading gases produced as side reactions. This battery can operate at a wide range of applications, from power tools to electric vehicles.

Cobalt and nickel are widely used to stabilize the cathodes of lithium-ion batteries. However, cobalt is a rare metal, and there are potential issues in cost stability and supply-chain reliability. There are also concerns with nickel, as increased demand in recent years has pushed up market prices. Toshiba''s new lithium-ion battery cathode is free of cobalt and contains less nickel, making it a superior solution in terms of cost and resource conservation.

Use of a 5V-class, high potential cathode in lithium-ion batteries will increase cell voltage and power performance, but its development has been held back by a practical problem: a side reaction that causes electrolyte decomposition and the generation of gas that degrades battery performance. Toshiba''s new cathode significantly suppresses gas generation when used with a conventional high conductivity electrolyte.

Toshiba has prototyped a pouch lithium-ion battery that combines its new cathode with a niobium titanium oxide (NTO) anode (Figure 1). In tests, the battery demonstrates a high voltage of over 3V, fast charging to 80% of capacity in 5 minutes, high power performance, and excellent lifetime characteristics, even at a temperature of 60°C. Target applications for the battery range from power tools and industrial application that require high voltage with a small battery pack, up to electric vehicles.

Toshiba will present the cathode technology at The 64th Battery Symposium of Japan, which will be held at the Osaka International Convention Center from November 28 to 30, 2023.
