The Romanian electric car charging network has approximately 1.700 charging points, which can be found on the PlugShare platform. Depending on the city where the next charging is planned, Romanians can find out where the charging points are, the type of stations (normal or fast) and the charge to charge.
Most shopping centers have charging stations installed in their parking lots to charge electric cars. Among them are Carrefour, Kaufland, Lidl, Mega Image, Ikea. And in certain gas stations Mol, Rompetrol, OMV, Petrom and LukOil you can find charging stations.
Owners of non-Tesla electric cars, who do not pay a monthly subscription of 60 lei, will pay rates of 3.05 lei/kWh. With a subscription, the rate is 2,25 lei/kWh. Tesla owners have a tariff of 1,85-2 lei/kWh if they have a subscription.
All stations have superchargers (CCS) up to 250 kW.
In Romania, the inactivity fee is 2,5 lei per minute. If the Tesla location has 100% occupied stations, the inactivity fee rises to 5 lei per minute.
The unregistered ones have the following rates: DC 2,7 lei/kWh, Ultra DC 3,3 lei/kWh, AC: 2,3 lei/kWh;
With a charging rate of 3,23 lei/kWh for AC, the stations have one of the highest rates in Romania to charge an electric car. Those who exceed 60 minutes from the moment of full charging will pay an additional 0,05 euro/minute (0,25 lei/minute).
DC: 4,23 lei/kWh via Be Charge at Lidl and Kaufland.
A few years ago, charging an electric car was free at almost any charging station.
The price of the electric recharge is calculated according to the battery capacity, the ratio between the calculated autonomy and the annual mileage as well as the price of electricity.
To find out how much it costs to fill up an electric car, multiply the net capacity of the battery by the price you have for a kWh at that station.
To find out how much a Bucharest - Brașov trip costs you with an electric car, you can make a calculation starting from the battery capacity and how many km you can travel on a full charge.
We take as an example a car with a battery that has a net capacity of 32 kWh which gives us an autonomy of 230 km (WLTP).
To travel 100 km with a classic car outside the city (consumption 6 liters/100 km) you will pay around 50 lei in 2023, and to travel the same distance with an electric car in the summer you will pay 15 lei if you charge at home, 25 lei at a public AC station or 45 lei at a fast DC station.
Renovatio will introduce a pricing system for its network of electric vehicle charging stations as of March 19, the company announced on its website. Users can choose from three types of subscriptions.
Retailer Kaufland, which hosts Renovatio charging stations in the parking of 20 of its shops, will offer its customers free charging, it announced. Kaufland customers can receive the free charging cards at the information desks in shops in 18 cities, including two shops in Bucharest. The retailer will cover the costs to Renovatio.
The basic subscription, called Start, doesn''t have a minimum contract duration and it doesn''t have a fixed cost. However, Start subscribers will have to pay RON 0.074 per minute for the slow charge service (vehicles with 4kW charging power), RON 0.254 per minute for the normal charge (for vehicles with 4kW-11kW charging power), RON 0.609 per minute for the semi fast charge (11kW-22kw), and RON 1.6 per minute for the fast charge (over 22kw).
The company will also introduce the Entry subscription, which costs RON 99 per month. Also, users will have to pay RON 0.039 per minute for the slow charge, RON 0.109 for the normal charge, RON 0.289 for the semi fast charge, and RON 0.888 for the fast charge.
The third type of subscription is the Fast one, which costs RON 220 per month. The charging tariffs for this subscriptions are RON 0.018 per minute for the slow charge, RON 0.049 for the normal charge, 0.131 for the semi fast charge, and 0.401 for the fast charge.
Renovatio has developed the first public network of charging stations for electric cars in Romania in 2016, currently with 61 charging points in 30 locations in big cities and along important roads. In mid-February, the company announced it would install 23 fast charging stations for electric vehicles in Romania this year, in a EUR 4.28 million project 80% financed by the European Union.

Romania is known for having Europe''s most generous incentives for electric vehicles. If you buy an EV in Romania today, you are eligible to get up to 45,000 RON ($11,150 / €9,100) from the government this can be cumulated with an additional 7,500 RON ($1,860 / €1,520) if you bring in an old car to be scrapped. This means that you can buy a brand new Tesla Model 3 Standard Range+, whose list price in Romania is €42,990 (VAT included).
Detracting the two incentives from that list price and adding the destination charge, we get €34,970. Does this mean Romania gets Europe''s cheapest Model 3? Well, based on research I did on the incentives in other EU countries, it would appear so, at least when it comes to initial purchase price. There are many European countries that offer rebates for EVs, while others offer tax reductions or exemptions.
Tesla recently officially entered the Romanian market, opening its first official pop-up store in a mall in the country''s capital, Bucharest, as well as the first Supercharger in the same mall''s multistorey car park. There''s still no official Tesla service center, though, and Romanian Tesla owners still have to drive all the way to Vienna, in Austria, to have their cars serviced. One should open in Romania by the end of the year, though.
