Today, the Defense Department announced $1.85 billion in additional security assistance for Ukraine, including a Patriot air defense battery and munitions.

A senior Defense Department official and a senior U.S. military official briefed the media today at the Pentagon.

"Patriot is one of the world's most advanced air defense systems, and it will give Ukraine a critical long-range capability to defend its airspace. It is capable of intercepting cruise missiles, ballistic missiles and aircraft. It's important to put the Patriot battery in context. For air defense, there is no silver bullet. Our goal is to help Ukraine strengthen a layered integrated approach to air defense. … Patriot will complement a range of medium and short-range air defense capabilities that we have provided and the allies have provided in prior donation packages,"the senior DOD official said.

Patriot will contribute to Ukraine's air defense systems that have been supplied by the U.S. and allies over the last number of months according to DOD.

The Patriot is a sophisticated air defense system so training will be required and will take some time, said the senior DOD official.

The security assistance announced today includes the authorization of a presidential drawdown of security assistance valued at up to $1 billion, as well as $850 million in assistance via the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative.

Unlike presidential drawdown, the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative is an authority under which the United States procures capabilities from industry rather than delivering equipment that is drawn down from DOD stocks. This announcement represents the beginning of a contracting process to provide additional capabilities to Ukraine's armed forces.

The Patriot system will augment previous air defense capabilities the United States has provided Ukraine.

To meet Ukraine's evolving battlefield requirements, the United States will continue to work with its allies and partners to provide Ukraine with key capabilities, according to a DOD news release.

Tesla batteries are powering houses in Ukraine as Russia continues attacking the country''s energy infrastructure.

Russia''s attacks on Ukraine''s energy infrastructure have left many Ukrainians without power. The owner of Ukrainian Autonomous Systems, Oleksandr Bentsa, realized he could salvage batteries from damaged Tesla to power Ukraine’s homes and businesses.

In November 2023, Teslarati wrote an article about Ukraine''s wreck importers, who restore damaged electric vehicles from North America. Bentsa buys crashed Teslas through insurance auctions in the United States. The damaged Teslas are imported into Ukraine, where they are usually restored and resold.

In the spring, Bentsa started a new trade: using Tesla batteries to provide Ukrainians with an alternative power source.

His new trade would help Ukrainians through rolling nationwide blackouts. Russia has dealt a severe blow to Ukraine''s electricity-generating capacity. As a result, energy companies have imposed nationwide blackouts, leaving homes and businesses without power for up to 20 hours a day.

"An old Tesla, including the cost of delivery, will be nearly $10,000. And you can turn that into 12 batteries, and also sell the parts," he told Financial Times.

Bentsa''s batteries have a capacity of 5kWh, enough to power a normal Kyiv apartment for 10 hours with some limitations. The salvaged Tesla batteries can power lights and some electric equipment but may not provide enough energy to run inefficient electric heaters.

Bentsa sells the 5kWh Tesla batteries to the Ukrainian army at a loss. Some civilian customers have also approached Bentsa to purchase Tesla batteries. Demand for the salvaged Tesla batteries have skyrocketed. Bentsa expects demand to increase further as winter looms closer.

The battery is the key component of the electric vehicle. As demand for electric cars and vehicles increases, manufacturers need to be confident the high-voltage batteries they use meet international standards for safety, reliability, endurance, and performance.
