Launched in 2017, the Cypress onshore wind platform has grown from an initial rating of 4.8 MW through to the latest 6.1 MW.

The Cypress platform advances the proven technology of GE''s 2 MW and 3 MW fleets, which serves an installed base of more than 35 GW, while also using architecture and innovations from the 4.8-158 wind turbine introduced in 2017.

By end 2023, almost 11 GW of Cypress onshore wind turbines have been booked as firm orders.

Significant AEP improvements

Condition Monitoring System (CMS)

The Cypress platform, which includes wind turbines with 158 and 164 meter rotor diameters, various hub heights, and power ratings between 4.8 and 6.1 MW, is equipped with both single piece and jointed blade variants, improving logistics and offering increased output from hard to reach sites. Longer wind turbine blades improve AEP and help drive down Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE), and the proprietary design will allow these larger onshore wind turbines to be installed in locations that were previously inaccessible.

This feature of the Cypress platform significantly drives down logistical costs by enabling blade assembly onsite and reduces the costs for permitting equipment and road work required for transporting longer blades. Equally important, the wind turbine features blade tips that offer customers greater flexibility to address site wind conditions and requirements.

The high-tech carbon blades were developed through the longtime partnership between GE''s Onshore Wind business, GE''s Global Research Center and GE''s LM Wind Power, taking advantage of the research, design, and large-scale manufacturing expertise of these teams to bring the Cypress wind turbine blades from concept to a tested and proven reality.

The Cypress platform features increased efficiency in serviceability, and improved logistics and siting potential, ultimately bringing more value for customers. It is designed to scale over time, enabling GE to offer a wider array of power ratings and hub heights to meet customer needs throughout the 5 and 6 MW wind turbine range.

The platform also offers a 50% increase in AEP over the life of the platform versus GE''s 3 MW turbines.

GE''s CMS and SCADA Anomaly Detection Services, compatible with our Cypress wind turbines, include a complementary suite of advanced condition monitoring solutions. These systems can proactively detect impending drive train and whole-turbine issues, enabling increased availability and decreased maintenance expenses, lowering the wind turbine''s cost of operation. Built upon half a century of power generation drivetrain and data anomaly monitoring experience, this service solution is now standard on GE''s 3 MW and Cypress platforms.

The Cypress platform, designed for IEC (S) wind speeds, leverages the best of GE''s 2 MW and 3 MW turbines—including the proven DFIG (doubly-fed induction generator)—and a robust drivetrain architecture.

The Cypress platform is specifically designed for service, with enhancements to help with facilitating up-tower repairs and troubleshooting with its up-tower electrical system. However, through increased systems-level hardware testing and a more robust manufacturing process, Cypress continues to push the limits of traditional reliability levels on major components.

This combination of planned, condition-based and predictive services will help to increase more reliability, uptime, and production while ultimately lowering lifecycle costs for customers.

While installation of commercial units is peaking, GE is operating a second prototype in Denmark to continue strengthening quality and validating new configurations and components.
