Driving an electric vehicle requires much more than just the will to do so and the financial means to do so, because there is another determining factor: the availability of recharging infrastructure. In Ivory Coast, where electromobility is beginning to be seen as an alternative to polluting transport, the town of Bouaké has just installed its first charging point for electric vehicles.
The system has been installed in front of a hotel popular with expatriates and the Ivorian middle class. This is no mean feat, as the initiative comes just a few weeks after the official arrival of cars made by Chinese carmaker Build Your Dreams (BYD) in Ivorian showrooms. This is part of a strategy by Loxea, a CFAO Group subsidiary, to diversify its sales fleet (internal combustion and electric vehicles).
The new charging point developed by EV.Tech was inaugurated as part of the “Durability Tour” event on green mobility. “We had the opportunity to test the destination charging service offered by the NEO network, with the participation of three electric vehicles from Abidjan: two BYD ATTO 3s from Loxea and a Tesla Model Y kindly loaned by our partner UrbanCOD for the occasion”, explains Florent Thomas, EV.Tech’s Managing Director. An opinion shared by Andy Costa, appointed BYD ambassador.
For his part, Ivory Coast’s Minister of Transport Amadou Koné said that this infrastructure was a concrete response to the process of “improving air quality, as the government of Ivory Coast wishes to do”. As proof of this, the country of elephants is one of the few in West Africa to have set up an Agency for the Promotion of Electric Mobility (Apeme), which encourages the private sector. It is in this context that the start-up Auto24 installed a charging point in 2023 in the council of Treichville.

The new African used car brand, backed by the Stellantis group, is installing the first public charging station for electric vehicles in the country, in Abidjan, with the help of the local company EV.Tech.
Auto24 is the new platform for selling and purchasing used vehicles inspected and certified in Côte d’Ivoire. Officially established on Ivorian territory in September 2022, Auto24 is a subsidiary of Africa Group, the leader in automotive classifieds in Africa. Auto24 already offers more than a hundred used vehicles, all inspected and certified, and equipped with services never before seen in used cars in Africa, such as a six-month warranty extendable to one year, one year of assistance and towing, one year of insurance, one year of maintenance with the CFAO Autofast network, and other services.
In the space of ten years, the market for electric vehicles has experienced strong growth all over the world, going from some 120,000 electric cars sold per year in 2012 to 120,000 electric cars sold per week, i.e., more than 6.6 million a year last year!
Propelled by the various energy crises and rising oil prices, the craze for electric cars continues to grow, and African consumers, especially Ivorians, are listening and ready to buy.

This is why Auto24, the African startup backed by the Stellantis automotive group, one of the world’s leading car manufacturers and mobility providers, is preparing its entry into the world of used electric vehicles in Côte d’Ivoire, and has just installed the first public electric car charging station in Côte d’Ivoire, in Treichville, municipality of Abidjan, in front of its head office and used car showroom.
Auto24 plans to support the supply by the Ivorian company EV. Tech, of more than 5,000 terminals in the coming years and thus making the acquisition and use of electric vehicles very accessible.
Côte d’Ivoire is one of the most dynamic African economies, with an annual growth rate of nearly 7% per year over the past 10 years, and one of the most favorable to the reception of electric vehicles, thanks to one of the most ecological energy mixes on the continent. Indeed, with 42% of the country’s energy production soon made up of green energy such as hydraulics, biomass and solar, the import of used electric vehicles, reconditioned and certified by Auto24, makes complete sense.
Thus, given the significant visibility of the country in the years to come, with the many infrastructure projects and international events such as the African Cup of Nations in February 2024, Auto24 has decided to accelerate on the electric vehicle.
The company will offer from January 2023 the first range of used electric vehicles for individuals or businesses locally in Côte d’Ivoire, such as Kia e-Soul, Kia e-Niro, Hyundai Kona electric and light commercial vehicles such as Hyundai Porter electric and Kia Bongo electric, sold in a pack including the complete installation of the right charging station in the office or at home. The company is already taking orders for equally high-end vehicles such as the Tesla Model 3.
All these vehicles will be physically exhibited in the company’s showroom in Abidjan and virtually on its auto24.ci website, and can be reserved on order via a deposit by mobile money with Wave Mobile Money, one of the regional leaders.
"We are very proud with the entire AUTO24 team to advance Côte d’Ivoire and Sub-Saharan Africa in the electrification of its car fleet by installing this first public charging station in the country, thus encouraging local consumers to take an interest in the subject. Especially since Côte d’Ivoire has one of the greenest energy mixes on the whole continent, thanks to its production of electrical energy with hydroelectric dams in particular," says Axel Peyrière, co-founder and CEO of Africa Group and AUTO24.africa.
