ACWA Power''s successful acquisition of financing support for our renewable project is a significant milestone. We''re fully committed to fast-tracking the project''s development while staying true to Egypt''s renewable energy targets.
We are delighted to reach this important milestone and deepen our partnership with ACWA Power as we promote renewable energy in Egypt, and indeed in Africa. Expanding clean energy generation is central to low-carbon development on the continent and contributes to further reducing carbon emissions and achieving of the goals of Paris Agreement. This is in line with the AfDB''s strategy to promote green growth in Africa. Kom Ombo Solar is also our first collaboration with EBRD, and OPEC Fund in Egypt and we look forward to many more successful partnerships as we seek to enhance more co-financing opportunities across the continent.
We are proud to support the financing of this highly strategic project. The Kom Ombo project is the first tendered utility-scale solar project in Egypt, and one of the first to be delivered under the Energy Pillar of the Nexus Water-Food-Energy (NWFE) initiative, whereby the Egyptian authorities are committed to developing 10 GW of new renewable energy projects and decommissioning 5 GW of thermal capacity. We look forward to the successful closing of the project, and to continuing our cooperation with our longstanding partner ACWA Power in advancing the transition to sustainable energy in the countries we operate in.
Gain comprehensive insights into the statistics and metrics surrounding the solar production industry in Egypt
On average, there are approximately 3451 hours of sunlight per year (out of a possible 4383 hours). 1
The reliability of the electrical power supply grid in Egypt has improved significantly in recent years. This enhancement is due to substantial investments in infrastructure, the expansion of power generation capacity, and the incorporation of renewable energy sources.
Electric Utility Structure
Egypt has signed memoranda of understanding for electricity grid interconnection with Greece, Cyprus, and Saudi Arabia, which can enhance overall reliability.
As of 2023, Egypt’s solar energy capacity reached 1,856 megawatts, marking a significant milestone in the country’s transition to renewable energy sources. Notably, solar energy accounted for a substantial 68.5% of Egypt’s total renewable energy capacity in 2023, solidifying its position as a leading source of clean energy in the country’s energy mix. 5
Egypt has set ambitious targets for solar energy production, aiming to reach a total solar panel production capacity of 7.71 gigawatts (GW) by 2030. This goal aligns with the country’s broader objective of having renewable energy sources account for 50% of its power generation by 2030. 6
According to Ember Climate, in 2023, 88% of Egypt’s electricity came from fossil fuels, with natural gas accounting for 57%, petroleum and other liquids accounting for 36%, coal accounting for 1%, and wind and solar accounting for 5%. Egypt’s largest clean electricity source is hydro, which accounts for 7% of the country’s electricity. 9
Exact number of hours is not mentioned in any data. But electricity access rates in Egypt are relatively ideal. As, according to the Egyptian State Information Service, Egypt’s national electricity grid has a daily reserve of more than 16,000 megawatts. [efn_noteEIA, Egypt-Overview, 2022, https://[/efn_note]
